Pagodes hebben een belangrijke culturele en religieuze betekenis:
Functie: Pagodes werden traditioneel gebouwd om boeddhistische relikwieën en artefacten te bewaren. Ze dienden ook als graftombes en opslagplaatsen. 
Symboliek: In de Chinese cultuur werden pagodes soms gebouwd om de feng shui van een gebied te corrigeren of om hulde te brengen aan leden van de keizerlijke familie. Er werd ook geloofd dat ze magische krachten bezaten om dorpen te beschermen tegen natuurrampen en demonen. 
Architectuur: De bouwwerken hebben meerdere, trapsgewijs oplopende verdiepingen, waarbij elke verdieping een eigen dak heeft. De naam 'pagode' is mogelijk afgeleid van de Chinese woorden voor 'acht', 'hoekig' en 'toren'.
