Edition originale de ces étranges mémoires justificatifs, adressés au maréchal de Castries et laissés par un aventurier qui se fit appeler le comte Robert de Paradès, mais sur l'identité exacte duquel on n'est pas encore très renseigné. L'homme fut en tout cas utilisé par Sartine, alors ministre de la Marine, pour renseigner la France sur les forces réelles de l'Angleterre, tant sur mer que sur terre, dans le conflit qui l'opposait à ses colonies d'Amérique. De fait, il effectua plusieurs reconnaissances couronnées de succès dans les ports de Plymouth, Porstmouth et Chatham, ainsi qu'en Irlande (1776-1779). Cependant, alors qu'il avait reçu la nouvelle mission d'observer les préparatifs de l'escadre que l'Angleterre voulait opposer à celle que nous envoyions en Amérique sous les ordres de Rochambeau, Paradès fut arrêté (avril 1780) et embastillé pour trahison des secrets d'Etat.

Original edition of these strange justifying memoirs, addressed to the Marshal of Castries and left by an adventurer who called himself Count Robert de Paradès, but on the exact identity of which we are not yet very informed. The man was in any case used by Sartine, then minister of the Navy, to inform France about the real forces of England, both at sea and on land, in the conflict which opposed him to his colonies of America. In fact, he carried out several successful reconnaissance at the ports of Plymouth, Portsmouth, and Chatham, and in Ireland (1776-79). However, having received the new mission of observing the preparations of the squadron which England wanted to oppose to that which we sent to America under the orders of Rochambeau, Paradès was arrested (April 1780) and embalmed for treason of state secrets.
