600 jaar oud, zeldzaam en vroeg voorbeeld van Christelijke beeldhouwkunst uit de Rijn-Vallei. Fraai gesneden en gestoken eikenhouten sculptuur Sedes Sapientiae. 'Troon der Wijsheid'. Dit type sculptuur, waarbij Christus op schoot zit bij zijn 'tronende' moeder, is bekend onder de latijnse naam Sedes Sapientiae. De thelogische gedachte hierachter is vrij complex. Als 'menselijke' moeder ondersteunt Maria haar zoon  op schoot, maar als Moeder van God dient ze als  de Troon van vleeswording (incarnatie) van de Goddelijke Wijsheid. De betekenis van de Sedes Sapientiae is derhalve tweeledig: zowel de menselijkheid als de goddelijkheid van Christus worden erin gepresenteerd.

Gotiek, Rijn-Vallei, 1e helft 15e eeuw.

Ontstaan in een tijd vrijwel zonder beeldcultuur, waarin het Christendom en de Kerk bepalend waren voor het dagelijks leven. Een dergelijk beeld zal bijna zeker ooit in een kerk of privé kapel hebben gestaan en diepe indruk hebben gemaakt op de beschouwer. 

Met liefde en eerbied in opdracht gemaakt door een kundig houtsnijder. Ook de achterzijde is prachtig gegutst. Het hout voelt erg hard aan, bijna versteend, door de ouderdom. 

Conditie: rechter onderarm en hand missend. Linkerkant met krimpscheur, deel daarvan is opgevuld, wellicht in de 19e of vroege 20e eeuw. Onderkant en bovenkant met oude geboorde gaten, vermoedelijk om het beeld ergens te bevestigen (in nis of op console).
