Omschrijving

Among the areas new light has been shed upon are: the lives of all the members of this illustrious family; the supposed invention of oil painting by Jan; and the brothers' collaboration on the masterwork The Altarpiece of the Mystic Lamb. Special attention is given to Jan, the better-known of the two; an extensive listing and analysis of his paintings is presented.

KORTE INHOUD

Jan van Eyck (ca. 1390-1441) was een kunstschilder uit het graafschap Loon, dat vanaf 1366 onder het prinsbisdom Luik viel. Men rekent hem naast Rogier van der Weyden tot de voornaamste vertegenwoordiger van de Vlaamse Primitieven. Tot zijn bekendste werk hoort het panelengeheel het Lam Gods (1432), te bezichtigen in de Sint-Baafskathedraal van Gent. Hubert was zijn broer. Gepoogd wordt in dit boek de persoonlijkheid van Hubert en Jan te onderscheiden en alzo de mystificatie rond hun persoon en werken te humaniseren.
Dit boek is geschreven door Elisabeth Dhanens (1915–2014), een Belgische kunsthistorica, gespecialiseerd in de kunst van de Vlaamse Primitieven en meer bepaald in de werken van de gebroeders Hubert en Jan van Eyck.
Het gebonden boek in groen halflinnen met goudopdruk en stofomslag zit in een cassette. Het boek telt 400 pagina’s met vele reproducties in kleur en zwart-wit op schaal en sommige zijn uitklapbaar. Het is een uitgave van het Mercatorfonds, Antwerpen 1980
