Sumerian Clay Tablet with Cuneiform Script
Circa 3rd-2nd millennium BC
This square cuneiform clay tablet bears impressions of wedge-shaped signs.
Cuneiform script was a system of writing used in ancient Mesopotamia, particularly in Sumer, dating back to the late 4th millennium BC. It is considered one of the earliest known forms of writing and was impressed onto clay tablets using wedge-shaped stylus marks. The intricate nature of cuneiform allowed it to capture a diverse range of information from administrative records to literary texts.

Provenance: Private European Collection; formerly acquired from old UK and European collection formed since the 1970s.
