In one of the most daring journeys of the 19th century, British explorer Richard Francis Burton disguised himself as an Afghan pilgrim to secretly enter the holy cities of Mecca and Medina—territories forbidden to non-Muslims. His detailed account blends adventure, anthropology, and geography, offering a rare Western insight into Islamic culture of the mid-1800s.

Content:
Burton’s narrative captures every stage of his remarkable expedition—from Cairo and Suez to the Hejaz, Medina, and finally Mecca. It includes descriptions of sacred rituals, topography, and daily life in Arabia, enriched with appendices and notes from his original journals.
This edition features an introduction by Tim Mackintosh-Smith and reproduces early photographic plates of the region, including rare 19th-century views of Mecca and Medina.
