Japanese Bronze Crane Standing on a Turtle – In Excellent Condition – No Reserve

A beautifully cast Japanese bronze sculpture depicting a crane gracefully standing on the back of a turtle (tsuru-kame motif). This timeless composition symbolizes longevity, wisdom, and harmony between heaven and earth — the crane representing spiritual elevation, and the turtle symbolizing endurance and stability.

Executed in the Meiji-style tradition, this 1950s piece reflects the enduring influence of late-19th-century bronze craftsmanship. The surface shows finely modelled details in both feathers and shell, with a naturally aged patina in greenish and brown hues.

NB: At the request of Catawiki, an extra photo has been added. On the underside of the base, a small, almost invisible scratch reveals the yellow glow of the bronze (see last photo).

Historical context
In Japanese art, the tsuru-kame motif (crane and turtle) is a traditional emblem of long life and divine protection. Originating in the Meiji era (1868–1912), this pairing became a favorite theme among bronze artists for temple ornaments and domestic décor, symbolizing the ideal balance between heaven (tsuru) and earth (kame).
