Sous sa forme humaine abstraite, la  lame Bango  affiche symétrie et sophistication. Elsen décrit ce type de lame comme une « arme de luxe pour les notables et les chefs ». Elles étaient également utilisées à des fins cérémonielles, notamment lors des rites d'initiation des jeunes hommes (Gosseau,  Tribal Arms Monographs, vol. 1, n° 2  , 1997).

En décrivant une lame différente mais étroitement apparentée, Blackmun résume succinctement son utilité : « Malgré les bords tranchants et tranchants à l’extérieur des deux lames arquées, les belles épées de ce type étaient principalement conçues comme des emblèmes de rang. Elles étaient portées par des hommes d’autorité lors d’occasions publiques. Comme les épées sacrificielles Ngombe, elles sont façonnées et décorées pour la beauté et l’élégance, et rehaussées de cuivre et de laiton » ( Lames de beauté et de mort , 1990).
