- Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) was a Czech painter, illustrator, and decorative artist whose distinctive style became synonymous with the Art Nouveau movement at the turn of the 20th century. Known for his elegant compositions featuring graceful figures, ornate detail, and harmonious color palettes, Mucha transformed commercial poster design into fine art and redefined visual culture in Europe.

Mucha rose to fame in Paris in the 1890s when his poster for actress Sarah Bernhardt, Gismonda (1894), captivated the city with its flowing lines and stylized natural motifs. His works characterized by idealized female figures framed by floral and geometric patterns combined classical beauty with spiritual symbolism. Beyond posters, Mucha’s creativity extended to paintings, jewelry, stained glass, and book illustrations, all infused with his philosophy that art should elevate daily life.

While best known for his decorative works, Mucha’s artistic vision also embraced a deep sense of nationalism and history. Later in life, he created The Slav Epic, a monumental cycle celebrating the history and identity of the Slavic peoples.

Heraldic Chivalry, reflects his fascination with medieval themes and the romantic ideals of knighthood. The scene depicts a noble knight and lady in richly adorned attire, rendered with exquisite attention to texture and symbolism. The composition blends historical accuracy with Mucha’s characteristic sense of elegance and grandeur transforming a medieval subject into an allegory of honor, devotion, and beauty.
