This is the desirable Type I (Early Model), first released in 1962, bearing the classic "Canon Camera Co., Inc." engraving.

A Legendary Rival to Leica

In the post-war era, this lens was Canon's direct challenge to the optical giants of Germany. It quickly earned the affectionate nickname "The Japanese Summicron" (和製ズミクロン, Wasei Summicron). This title was a testament to its exceptional performance, which many users felt rivaled (or even surpassed) its contemporary, the legendary Leica Summicron 35mm f/2.
