Western Asiatic Rock Crystal Fist Amulet (No Reserve Price)

A fine Western Asiatic rock crystal amulet in the shape of a clenched fist. Linear incisions portray the four fingers curled inwards and a thumb at the end. A cylindrical wrist extends below. The reverse is flattened. The pendant is perforated through the wrist for suspension. Some minor wear, pitting, earthy encrustations and scratches to the surface, consistent with age. Some stable internal cracks to the rock crystal. On top of gold, stones such as carnelian, turquoise or rock crystal were used for jewellery. In particular, the latter was appreciated for its delicate transparency, and further used in objects such as vessels or tools. Representations of animals comprised a large portion of the Ancient Near Eastern artistic repertoire. Specifically, images of wild animals and creatures considered dangerous or powerful appear in all periods of ancient Near Eastern art, dating back to the Neolithic period. Measurements: L 1.9 cm W 1.3cm Provenance: Ex S.M. Collection, London, Mayfair, acquired 1970s-90s. N.B. Delivery may be longer due to the busier period and we do not guarantee delivery before Christmas. Items paid for after the 19th December will be shipped after the New Year (week commencing on the 5th January 2026). **There will be an additional fee incurred for returned shipments due to buyer’s non-response to customs enquiries and/or unsuccessful delivery attempts.**
