Paolo Pellegrin - Sirmione - 2017

Scarce book. Not for sale ! Paolo Pellegrin is a Magnum Photos photographer since 2001. He had never been to Sirmione, he had never been able to observe, with his own eyes, the tongue of land that flows into Lake Garda, the grottoes of Catullus, the castle, the streets and views of the old town centre. Paolo Pellegrin had never been to Sirmione until, when he arrived to complete a very important photographic project, he was enchanted by what he observed and what he was able to make eternal through the lens of his camera. "Photographing Sirmione was like discovering the characters of a person through his portrait. Meeting his different personalities in different seasons is what fascinated me the most." (Paolo Pellegrin, November 2017) The book collects these shots in a volume of almost one hundred pages. Paolo Pellegrin is widely regarded as one of the most important contemporary documentary photographers and a central figure in the evolution of modern photojournalism. Born in Rome in 1964, Pellegrin studied architecture before turning to photography, a transition that deeply shaped his visual language. His images are recognizable for their architectural sense of structure, dramatic contrasts, and emotionally charged compositions. A full member of Magnum Photos since 2001, Pellegrin has spent more than three decades documenting some of the most complex humanitarian and geopolitical stories of our time. His work spans conflict zones, natural disasters, migration crises, and the lives of individuals whose experiences reflect the broader human condition. He has worked extensively across the Middle East, the Balkans, Africa, and the United States, producing photographs that have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, TIME, Der Spiegel, and major international publications. What sets Pellegrin apart is his ability to merge journalistic rigor with a highly personal, poetic visual style. His black-and-white photographs are often raw, atmospheric, and deeply immersive. Through the use of shadow, fragmented frames, and dynamic movement, he creates images that are both intensely real and artistically expressive. Pellegrin’s work is never detached; it reflects a profound empathy for the people he photographs, and an enduring commitment to revealing the human stories behind global events. Throughout his career, Paolo Pellegrin has received some of the highest honors in photography, including: - Robert Capa Gold Medal - Ten World Press Photo Awards - The W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography - The Olivier Rebbot Award - The Peabody Award - The Leica Medal of Excellence - The Hasselblad Foundation Grant His photographs have been exhibited in major museums and galleries worldwide, and are held in significant public and private collections. Considered one of the defining visual chroniclers of the contemporary world, Paolo Pellegrin continues to produce work that challenges, moves, and inspires. His photographs stand as powerful documents of our time—rich in atmosphere, emotional depth, and artistic clarity
