Aldo Gentilini was born in Genoa in 1911. From a young age, he felt a strong religious vocation that led him to enter the cloistered monastery of Pietrasanta, where he stayed for three years completing philosophical studies. He then dedicated himself as a self-taught artist, which led him to exhibit in numerous shows in Italy and abroad.
Man of faith, he believes that only through art can one reach the divine. And this thought will serve as the backdrop to all his work:
I try to make space — declared Gentilini — this void causes me a certain catharsis: I observe sensitive values that I respect, I reevaluate them, but I never know how I will fall into the frame, and this is the realization of a truth towards the sign never thought of.
He was an artist practicing asceticism to imitate the Saint he was devoted to. The two natures, that of the human and that of the aesthetic, perfectly coincide.
