Description from the seller
Finely Hand-Carved Colonial Serving Teak Tray – Signed & Dated 1919
In Excellent Condition – No Reserve
A beautifully hand-carved serving tray made of solid teak hardwood, richly detailed and signed by the maker. This tray is dated Anno 1919 and features an exceptional geometric and starburst pattern, carved with remarkable depth and precision.
Where many colonial trays display floral or bird motifs, this rare example stands out with a symmetrical star-mandala composition, framed by stylised foliate borders and fine zigzag carving. The initials C.V. and W.T. are carved on the surface, and the underside bears an additional handwritten signature — a wonderful personal touch that highlights the piece’s handmade origin.
Such trays were typically produced in the Asian colonies (likely Indonesia or Ceylon) in the early 20th century for export to European households. They combine the warmth of exotic hardwoods with a level of decorative craftsmanship that reflects both indigenous carving traditions and subtle Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) influences in the flowing lines and symmetry.
