A Meo people low-grade silver Pectoral Disc
Timor-Leste - early 20th century

This breast plate or pectoral disc was skillfully crafted from colonial metal (Dutch silver coins) and once worn by Meo warriors. Discs like these were given to warriors upon their successful returns as a reward, and later worn as a symbol of prestige during ceremonies. The designs on the plate depict animals and the cosmos or celestial elements. These pectoral plates were also offered by a groom or his family to the family of the woman. It holds deep cultural significance as a symbol of strength and nobility among the Belu Timorese people.


Diameter = 8.1 cm - 8.5 cm
Weight = 32.4 g

In good condition. Normal traces of age and use.
