This ancient Roman oil lamp features Apollo in a griffin-drawn chariot with rich iconography and solid provenance from a Belgian auction house.
Description from the seller
A nice roman mold-formed terracotta oil lamp featuring a decorated discus with rounded shoulders, a heart-shaped nozzle, and a ring handle. The outward-sloping shoulders are trimmed with a fluted petal-pattern. The concave discus of the lamp is decorated with an image of Apollo riding a chariot pulled by griffins ( Body of a lion and head and talons of an eagle ). The figures well-detailed with fill-hole on the center. | Rome. 2nd-3rd Century A.D.
Dimensions: 10,00 cm
Condition: Surface wear but good condition.
Provenance: Belgian auction house. Formerly Belgian private collection. Invoice seen by Catawiki.
