Toshio Shibata - Lot with 2 books: Japan & 1987 - 2023-2025

You're bidding on two books by Toshio Shibata. Toshio Shibata is a contemporary Japanese photographer. He is best known for his large-scale photographs of civil engineering set in the landscapes of rural Japan. “Photography is not something that you can make. It cannot be forced,” he said. “You have to accept the subject.” Born in 1949 in Tokyo, Japan, Shibata studied at the Tokyo University of Fine Arts where he received an MFA in 1974. In 1975, he received a fellowship from the Belgian Ministry of Education to study at the Royal Academy of Ghent. The artist lives and works in Kamakura, Japan. His works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Japan Publisher: Prestel, 2023 Hardcover, 176 pages, English Size: 30.2x25.1cm As new in seal Spanning the career of one of Japan's most revered photographers, this monograph-- the only English-language volume of its kind--features exquisitely detailed full- page images that capture the relationship between human-made structures and the natural world. Toshio Shibata's large-format contemporary landscapes are distinguished by their haunting beauty, graceful composition, and meticulous detail. Using long exposures, and eliminating any references to people, horizons, or identifying geographic reference points, Shibata captures structures such as dams, bridges, reservoirs, and roads as they interact with their natural settings--mountainsides, rivers, forests and fields. The results are highlighted by painterly composition; filled with patterns, lines, and fluid action; and unmistakably Japanese in their aesthetic. Curated and with commentary by Phillip Prodger, one of the most erudite and critical voices in contemporary photography, this book will appeal both to fans of Shibata's work as well as an audience that has yet to discover his remarkable oeuvre. Toshio Shibata – 1987 Publisher: Deadbeat Club, 2025 Softcover, 40 pages, English Size: 23x18cm New in seal In anticipation of the 1989 World Design Exposition in Nagoya, legendary photographer Toshio Shibata was commissioned by the pioneering gallerist Etsuro Ishihara, founder of the Zeit-Foto Salon, to participate in a series of trips through Egypt and Turkey. The photographs in this book are the direct outcome of that commission, all captured in 1987 during Shibata’s second visit to Turkey’s Cappadocia region and on a trip along Egypt’s Aswan Western Agricultural Road, which, following a canal on the left bank of the Nile, covers more than 400 miles between Cairo and Luxor. Made half a decade before his first publications and featuring a rare exploration of portraiture, the body of photographs presented in 1987 offers a unique and striking window into Shibata’s early work. As Shibata found himself confronted with unfamiliar countries and landscapes, we can already distinguish some of the signature elements that would come to define his sought-after style, with a keen eye for the interweaving between the natural and man-made elements, and a masterful use of light. Shibata’s work can be found in the permanent collections of museums worldwide, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Tate Modern; London; La Maison de la Photo Europeenne, Paris; TOP Museum Tokyo; and The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.
