Opal is a mineral from the mineral class of 'oxides and hydroxides.' As an amorphous solid, opal (similar to glass) has no crystal structure and usually appears as massive vein fillings or nodular formations.
Opals are used exclusively for jewelry stones.
The word 'Opal' was borrowed from Latin 'opalus' or Greek ὀπάλλιος 'opallios' for 'precious stone' and probably traces back to Sanskrit 'upala'. According to Allan W.. Eckert in his work 'The World of Opals', it was used to refer to various rocks, while the early Magyars called opal mines 'opálbánya'.
Opals were considered particularly valuable gemstones in antiquity, sometimes even valued higher than diamonds. Pliny the Elder wrote about them: '[...] they possess a fire, finer than that of the carbuncle; they have the purple spark of the amethyst, the sea-green of the emerald, and an overall incredible mixture of light.'
