Handmade - Textile (3) - 55 cm - 55 cm - Brussels lace c. 1900

Antique Brussels Lace Set – Two Collars and Bodice Insert – ca. 1900 – Handmade – Label “F. H. Gaskell”. An elegant and rare collection of three exquisite antique lace garments, superbly handmade in fine Brussels lace around 1900. The set includes: One large Brussels lace collar with richly worked floral and scroll motifs (approx. 55 × 55 cm), One smaller collar of delicate floral design (approx. 43 × 25 cm), One lace bodice insert with fine net ground and Brussels lace edging (approx. 27 × 27 cm). These pieces display all the hallmarks of authentic Brussels lace, combining needle and bobbin techniques. The motifs – finely raised flowers, leaves, and scrolls – are meticulously worked and appliquéd onto a handmade net ground. This refined technique gives Brussels lace its characteristic lightness, depth, and exceptional delicacy, making it one of the most prized lace types in Europe during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Two of the pieces retain an original embroidered label reading “F. H. Gaskell”, possibly identifying a previous owner or collector. Typical of the late Victorian to early Edwardian fashion, this lace set exemplifies the refined elegance and delicate craftsmanship admired by the European elite around 1900. Brussels lace was historically regarded as the finest of all handmade laces, favoured by royalty and haute couture houses for its soft texture and intricate floral patterns. Its production required immense skill and time – a single large collar could take several weeks of meticulous work. Very good antique condition – some light patina and minor age-related discoloration consistent with age. Lace structure intact and well-preserved. Carefully stored and protected in purple tissue paper (visible in photos). A rare and refined ensemble of genuine Brussels lace, ideal for collectors of antique textiles, lace connoisseurs, or museum display.
