Frederick Carlton (Carl) Lewis (Birmingham, Alabama, July 1, 1961) is a former American athlete who won ten Olympic medals, nine of which are gold, and at the World Championships in Athletics, he won ten medals, eight of which are gold. Lewis's career, which was periodically interrupted, lasted from 1979 to 1996, when he earned his ninth Olympic title.
Lewis was a sprinter and long jumper, who from 1980 to the early nineties regularly ranked number one in the world in the 100 m and 200 m sprints and the long jump. He broke world records in the 100 m, 4 x 100 m relay, and 4 x 200 m relay. In 1982, 1983, and 1984, he was chosen as Athlete of the Year by Track & Field News, an American athletics magazine. His sequence of 65 consecutive wins in the long jump over ten years is one of the most remarkable achievements ever in athletics.
