En raison de la forte et vaste influence culturelle que les Mangbetu exerçaient sur leurs populations voisines, ce type d'arme était largement répandu et était connu sous de nombreux noms en plus de  nagata , notamment  mambele ,  nagala ,  nambele ,  dupa et  trumbash .

Historiquement,  les lames Nagata  étaient utilisées lors des affrontements entre les Mangbetu et les Zande, mais au XXe siècle, elles étaient utilisées à des fins pacifiques et brandies lors des danses cérémonielles. Elles étaient également utilisées comme insignes de dignité et offertes en cadeau diplomatique. Leurs détails et leur finition raffinés conféraient à leur porteur une certaine distinction et contribuaient à sa réputation et à sa richesse (Schildkrout & Keim,  African Reflections: Art From Northeastern Zaire,  1990 ; Vanderstraete,  Monnaies Objets d'Échange,  2016).
