About the artist:
Sean Scully was born in 1945 in Dublin. After completing his art studies in London, he moved to New York in 1975. In addition to New York, he also lives and works in Barcelona and Munich. In 2007, Sean Scully was appointed as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Sean Scully's works are based on an artistic engagement with vertical and horizontal color stripes and rectangles. Through the use of different techniques and materials, Sean Scully creatively explores minimalist motifs. While in his early works he used tape to create precise edges, he moved away from this method in the 1980s. At that time, he deliberately chose to paint the outlines manually so they would appear softer and more lively. Brushwork and application are clearly visible, and a dark, earthy color palette characterizes most of his paintings. Additionally, Sean Scully also creates etchings, lithographs, pastels, and watercolors. All of these resemble each other in motif and composition. His photographic works also deal with geometric shapes, capturing individual facades, doors, windows, and brick walls. In the 1990s, he also created the series 'Floating Paintings,' consisting of rectangular aluminum blocks painted with stripes and hung along their length.
