Malick Sidibé - Malick Sidibé (1936-2016), born in Soloba, was a local photographer, totally unknown on the international photography scene. It was following one of the first Rencontres Africaines de la Photographie held in 1994 in Bamako that his work began to gain international prominence, making him one of the essential references for African photography. At the end of the 1950s, Malick gained a certain notoriety in Bamako for touring the nightlife venues of Mali, portraying the intense nightlife of the capital, which was also booming due to a flourishing development of the gold and cotton trade. In 1962, he opened Studio Malick, a modest photography studio from which he created a sociological x-ray of African youth in the 1960s, a transcendental period for the African continent. His portraits are simple but radiate energy, but also a close complicity with the photographer.
