Description from the seller
2 Larimar earrings / cabochon / new
Cast in 925 sterling silver
Total weight: 2.58 g / 12.9 ct
Approximately 9.6 mm x 7.8 mm x 17.5 mm.
Brand new and unworn
Larimar is a blue-white mottled variety of Pektolith that has so far only been found at two locations: in a transformed, ultrabasic volcanic rock on the Barahona Peninsula in the Dominican Republic and at 'Fittà' near Soave in Italy. Larimar has nothing to do with the blue amber also found on Hispaniola, which is sometimes processed in the same facilities in Puerto Plata and in the same manner as Pektolith.
Larimar was only discovered in 1974 (the legend that it was already known to the island's indigenous people is false) and has been commercially used as a jewelry stone since the early 1980s. Compared to white pectolith, Larimar is harder (up to 6 on the Mohs scale) and occurs exclusively in dense, fine-crystalline aggregates. Its sky-blue color is due to trace amounts of vanadium (not copper, as there are verifiably Cu-free Larimar); additionally, greenish varieties exist, whose color is probably due solely to lattice defects.
Shipping as insured registered mail.
