Huichol Baobab - Sculpture - Malawi

Conceived from the creative mind and painted by internationally recognised Malawian artist George Mkumbula, this work uses colour and pattern as an active, structuring force. The painted surface operates as a visual syntax, articulating rhythm, movement and depth, and transforming the sculpted form into a unified contemporary artwork. Its vibrant chromatic language consciously echoes the visual intensity and symbolic richness found in Huichol painting traditions, reinterpreted here through a contemporary African lens. The painting completes a structure carved from a single piece of local hardwood by sculptor George Lassi. Drawing from the iconic silhouette of the baobab tree, the carving is reimagined as an expressive, vertical form that evokes both strength and organic fluidity. The branching crown opens the sculpture upwards, reinforcing its dynamic balance. The dialogue between painting and carving is central to the work’s identity. Neither element is subordinate: surface and volume respond to one another, positioning Huichol Baobab at the crossroads of sculpture and painting, cultural memory and contemporary expression. A one-of-a-kind statement piece with a strong visual presence, suited for collectors of contemporary African art and curated modern interiors. This artwork is offered in support of Sail for Ethics, a cultural and sustainable maritime initiative. Unique work.
