Hilaire Bals (born 1940) was a professional artist who began his artistic career as a student at the Academy of Sint-Niklaas, where his teachers included Marcel Mutsaerts and Raf Coorevits.
After this training, he focused on painting still lifes, animals, and paintings with a symbolist influence. Hilaire Bals's paintings can unmistakably be considered realistic. However, the intention is never to create a purely photographic representation; atmosphere and interpretation of reality play an important role. Consistently, against all trends, he upholds craftsmanship as a top priority. This perseverance results in paintings that testify to a love for beauty.
