Description from the seller
Orthodox icon of Archangel Michael with saint bishops and martyrs.
In the center is Archangel Saint Michael, depicted as the leader of the heavenly armies. He wears armor and a red cloak, symbolizing his spiritual power and his role as defender of the faith. In his hands, he holds a medallion with the face of Christ, an image of the Holy Face or Acheiropoietos ('not made by human hands'), symbolizing incarnation and divine protection.
Santos identifiable by the inscriptions in Cyrillic.
On the sides of the archangel, there appear saints highly venerated in the Orthodox tradition.
To the left of the Archangel
Saint Nicholas (with episcopal mitre, cross on his omophorion)
Very recognizable by his bishop iconography and beard.
Probably a martyr or apostle (without episcopal vestments, halo, and gospel)
To the right of the Archangel
San Basilio el Grande (Saint Basil)
His name is clearly visible in Cyrillic script above him.
A saintly martyr (possibly Santa Bárbara or Santa Catalina according to iconographic tradition).
General theme of the icon
This type of composition is known as:
The Archangel Michael with Hierarchs and Martyrs
o
San Miguel carrying the Holy Face
It is a representation of celestial protection and defense of the faith, bringing together the leader of the celestial armies with great doctrinal defenders such as Saint Nicholas and Saint Basil.
