Ancient Greek silver drachm struck in the name of Alexander III (the Great), featuring the head of Heracles on the obverse and Zeus enthroned on the reverse; diameter about 1.8 cm and weight 4.23 g, circa 4th century BC.
Description from the seller
A very fine ancient Greek silver drachm struck in the name of Alexander III, the Great. The obverse displays the profiled head of Herakles wearing the skin of the Nemean lion, facing right. The reverse displays the god, Zeus, enthroned on the left, holding an eagle in his right hand and a sceptre in his left. The Greek inscription ΑΛΕΞΑΝ∆ΡΟΥ is written vertically to the right of the figure of Zeus. The legend, written in the genitive case, translates as ALEXANDROY, meaning [the coinage] ‘of Alexander’.
