Ancient Egypt, Late Period; Large Openwork Wedjat Amulet (Eye of Horus) in black hardstone, dating to circa 664–332 BC, in very good condition.
Description from the seller
A superb ancient Egyptian openwork, black hardstone wedjat amulet, more commonly known as the Eye of Horus. The piece depicts a stylised eye combining human and falcon characteristics, including the eyebrow and a long cheek marking which extends vertically from the pupil. Another marking descends from the bottom of the eye, extending outwards diagonally and ending in a spiral. The space between this marking and the eye is open, whilst the remaining background has been decoratively hatched. The amulet has been perforated horizontally for suspension.
Horus was one of the most significant Ancient Egyptian deities, most commonly depicted with the head of a falcon, and the body of a man. The eye of Horus, also known as ‘Wedjat’, was an ancient symbol of protection, particularly for the afterlife, and was also used to deflect evil. For this reason, it was often worn or hung on the deceased at burial. This symbol was highly influential in Egyptian life, with ancient sailors painting the image on the bow of their vessels to ward off evil.
Measurements: L 4cm x H 2.8cm
Provenance: Early 20th Century UK Collection
