Flusslandschaft, a late 19th-century Danish oil painting in the Impressionism style, sold with a frame.
Description from the seller
Carl Milton Jensen (1855–1928)
Forest landscape with stream
Technique: oil on canvas
Dimensions: 57 × 42 cm (with frame), 44 × 29 cm (without frame)
Likely late 19th to early 20th century.
Description
The present painting depicts an atmospheric forest landscape, typical of the work of Carl Milton Jensen. A gently babbling brook winds through the wooded terrain, forming the central focal point of the composition. On the left and right of the shore, early spring flowers sprout among moss and leaves, while the slender tree trunks of the sparse forest reach rhythmically upward. The finely graded color palette – from cool water reflections to warm earth tones and fresh greens – lends the depiction a natural, quiet harmony.
Jensen succeeds in capturing the mood of an early spring morning: transparent light, still bare branches, and delicate, newly awakening green. The attention to detail in the watercourse, the lively modeling of the terrain, and the precise observation of the vegetation testify to a confident hand and an intensive study of nature. The work appears equally calm and lively, offering the viewer an immediate access to the Danish landscape, which was of central importance to Jensen's oeuvre.
artistic classification
Carl Milton Jensen was a Danish landscape painter whose works were heavily influenced by the naturalism of the late 19th century. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and belongs to the generation of artists who captured Danish landscapes with a keen sense of atmosphere, light, and seasonal moods.
His works have been exhibited multiple times in Denmark and often depict woodland areas, streams, coastal sections, and fields — always with an emphasis on natural tranquility and carefully observed vegetation. Jensen's painting style is characterized by clear compositions, subtle tonal gradations, and a calm yet precise depiction of nature. The present work fittingly aligns with this tradition.
Condition:
The painting is in good, age-appropriate condition. The canvas is stable, and the paint layer appears clear and well preserved. The gilded frame is decorative and suitable, with minor signs of use. Overall, the work is immediately ready for hanging and presents itself in collectible condition.
