Amethyst refers to the violet varieties of the mineral quartz. Like quartz, amethyst is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), but with small additional impurities, mainly of iron (Fe).

Even the majority of other properties such as Mohs hardness (7), density (2.65 g/cm³), cleavage (none), fracture (shell-like), streak color (white), and luster (glass to greasy luster) correspond to those of quartz.

Amethyst is used exclusively as a gemstone.
