Backgammon is a contemporary variant of an ancient board game for two opponents, who aim to move their checkers as quickly as possible to the last quarter of the board to then remove them from the game, with one player's endpoint being the other's starting point. Dice introduce an element of chance, but the checkers can be blocked or hit by the opponent, so strategy also plays a role. It is one of the oldest known games in the world, and its rules vary from region to region and over time.
Backgammon is the English and international designation, but in several European countries, the game is referred to by variants of the name Tric a Trac.
