Pair of hand-painted porcelain vases with a cobalt blue ground and raised gold ornament, Bohemia, ca. 1890–1910, height 28.5 cm, max diameter 13.5 cm, in good condition with light signs of wear consistent with age.
Description from the seller
Pair of porcelain vases – Hand-painted with gallant scenes – Cobalt blue and gold background – Bohemia, circa 1890–1910
Detailed description
Elegant pair of porcelain vases finely decorated, characterized by an intense cobalt blue background with rich applications of matte gold and shiny gold, worked in relief with rocaille motifs, foliate scrolls, and ornamental lattices.
On the oval frames, skillfully bordered by rich gold ornaments, there are gallant scenes of neoclassical taste, handcrafted with extraordinary pictorial care: soft flesh tones, detailed drapery, and a painterly style typical of late 19th-century Bohemian production. Cupid figures, female figures, and woodland landscapes recreate an idyllic atmosphere inspired by 18th-century French painting.
The mark on the back, a sinuous line 'ribbon' painted in blue, sometimes attributed to small manufacturers from Bohemia or the Austro-Hungarian area, confirms production between 1890 and 1910.
The pair is particularly decorative: the glossy surfaces, the depth of the blue, and the brilliance of the embossed gold create a strong visual impact, perfect for a sideboard, a fireplace, or a display cabinet.
Technical specifications
Material: hand-painted porcelain
Deco: cobalt blue background, raised gold, polychrome gallant scenes.
Painting technique: glass tesserae and gold applied with a brush.
Brand mark: a ribbon sign painted in blu sottocristallina.
Production area: Bohemia (probable)
Period: circa 1890–1910
Measurements: Height 28.5 cm; Maximum diameter 13.5 cm.
Conditions
Objects in good overall condition with signs of age: slight wear to the gold (consistent with age and use), small imperfections in the cobalt blue due to firing, no visible breakage, no structural cracks, pictorial scenes perfectly legible and bright. Overall, very good condition for the period.
Curiosity
The romantic scenes of this type draw inspiration from 18th-century French models inspired by Fragonard and Rococo painting. The cobalt blue background required a second firing at a different temperature, which is why it is only found in high-quality manufactories. The 'ribbon mark' is a typical signature of small bohemian workshops, operating alongside major factories like Royal Vienna or Carlsbad.
Shipping
Professional and very careful packaging. Trackable shipping.
