Description from the seller
Giulio Scapaticci (Milan, May 27, 1933 – Milan, 2006)
Scapaticci's painting represents a lyrical gaze, a metaphorical snapshot in the gestures of expression. A singer of a world of urban outskirts, humble everyday objects, images of farmhouses as if suspended in an indefinite time, riverbanks and beaches where man is absent, and if present, always alone, waiting. Interior-exteriors where the softness of chromatic tones evokes a dream, a calm and intimately lyrical atmosphere. Of libertarian nature, Scapaticci traversed 1950s and 1960s Milan, where art was a fundamental pillar. The Milan of the navigli, bandits, lyricism, thick and impenetrable fogs. These were formidable years when artists looked at each other to transfer fragility onto canvas and material. Italian art looked to France, Germany, and vice versa. The Jamaica bar in Milan became the center of Milanese art and beyond. Near Brera, this smoky, ancient venue was frequented by painters, poets, sculptors, and Italian and foreign lyric singers. Scapaticci was there, with other artists, and it was there that ideas and insights in painting, sculpture, and poetry developed around wine and cigarettes.
Giulio Scapaticci's Metaphysical Milan
In a painting, there is something you cannot see and will never see, impossible to define: the soul, the intuition of the original meaning of things, the expression of personal wounds.
