Massimo Iosa Ghini (Bologna 1959) made his debut in the lively cultural ferment of Bologna in the early years of the 1980s, characterized among others by the founding of the University of Arts and Communication by Umberto Eco.
Having moved to Milan, even before becoming one of the founding fathers alongside Ettore Sottsass Jr., Alessandro Mendini, and Michele De Lucchi of the legendary Memphis design group, he participated in the Milanese avant-gardes of Italian Design. In 1985, he founded the Gruppo Bolidismo, characterized by the tension and purity of its futurist-inspired curved lines. In this Set da te/caffè, designed for Naj Oleari, he brilliantly conveys this sense of dynamism through a material that is inherently static and plastic by nature: ceramics.
In the vibrant Milan of those years, it is valuable to interpret the 'essence of Italy' through its work for brands that represent Italian excellence worldwide, including Ferrari, Maserati, Superga, and Alitalia, for which he designed workspaces, stores, and a coordinated image that allows the company to be immediately recognizable.
Regarding product design, they collaborate with companies of the caliber of Cassina, Poltrona Frau, Snaidero kitchens, Oikos, Leucos, and iGuzzini Illuminazione.
From the 1990s to today - with its architectural and design projects, it addresses the theme of environmental sustainability, which has become prominent and is combined with the capacity for technical and stylistic innovation of the Italian production system; a concept summarized in the phrase 'Sustainable but Beautiful'.
His projects have received significant recognitions, including the Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum and the Red Dot Award, as well as notable mentions such as the Premio Compasso D’Oro ADI.
In 2013, the Triennale di Milano dedicated an entire retrospective to her 30-year professional career, from her beginnings to sustainable today, later also presented by MAMbo - Museum of Modern Art of Bologna.
