Sasanian Gold-filled Ring - Sasanian intaglio gryllos

REPLICA or Ca. AD 400 - 600. A red garnet intaglio engraved with a figure of Gryllos, composed of a fusion of human and animal features arranged in profile. The details are incised with fine linear strokes. The gem is set within a beaded gold bezel bordered by clustered granules and flanked by large spheres on either side. The hoop is formed from twisted gold wire.For similar see: D. Del Bufalo, Catalogo illustrato della Glittica nella Collezione Santarelli, n. i. 47/91g.Size: D:17.12mm / US: 6 3/4 / UK: N; Weight: 3gProvenance: Private UK collection; formerly in a 1980s-1990s London collection.
