Cartier - Tank Américaine Chronograph X-Large - 18 Carat Yellow Gold - 'Triple Date' - Ref. 2892 - Men - 2000-2010

Welcome to my Top Swiss Chronographs Boutique! Founded by Louis-François Cartier in Paris in 1847, this name is icon of haute style forewer. Cartier is regarded as one of most prestigious jewellery manufacturers worldwide. In 2018, it is ranked by Forbes as the world's 59th most valuable brand. Cartier has proud, long history of sales to royalty; the watchmaker has perhaps the most enviable historical claim of any watch brand: purveyor of the first men’s wristwatch, the Cartier Santos, in 1911. Sure, Rolex and others have some notable technological innovations, but Cartier started it all. As the story goes, in 1904, Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont complained to friend Louis Cartier about the unreliability and impracticality of using a pocket watch while flying. Cartier designed a flat wristwatch with a square bezel and gave it to Cartier, and the watch eventually caught on with other customers. Thus, the first mass-produced men’s wristwatch (and first pilot’s watch; take that IWC!) was born. While there’s debate about the first humans to take flight — Santos-Dumont or the Wright brothers — there is no debate about the first men’s wristwatch. What also can’t be debated is that Santos-Dumont became the first person to be filmed in an airplane flight in November 1906 when he took flight for 21.5 seconds, with a Cartier watch on his wrist. The original Cartier Tank was born in 1917, designed by Louis Cartier. Its rectangular shape was inspired by the overhead view of French Renault military tanks used in World War I. The bold, straight brancards (side bars) and clean Roman numerals created a design unlike anything else at the time. The first Tank was given in 1918 to General John Pershing of the American Expeditionary Force. Fast forward to the late 1980s. Cartier wanted to bring the Tank into a more modern, sculptural era while keeping its heritage intact. In 1989, the Tank Américaine was introduced. It borrowed the elongated, curved case from the rare 1920s Tank Cintrée (Cartier’s arched version), but with a slightly wider, more assertive stance—made specifically to appeal to the American market’s preference for bolder proportions. The case curves to follow the wrist, making it both more comfortable and more architectural. The Tank Américaine kept all the classic Tank codes: – Roman numerals – Railroad minute track – Blued sword-shaped hands – Sapphire cabochon crown During the 1990s–2000s, the Tank Américaine became a playground for Cartier’s horological ambitions. It was offered in: - automatic and quartz - 18kt yellow, white and rose gold - chronograph - dual time / GMT - triple-date and moonphase versions - X-Large and XL sizes Offered Tank Ref. 2892: chronograph X-Large in 18kt gold with Triple Date — is one of the most complex and rare configurations ever made in the Américaine case. These were targeted at collectors and high-end clients and were produced in relatively low quantities. This period (roughly the 1990s to mid-2000s) is now considered the “golden era” for complicated Tanks. Movement: - Cartier 205 self-winding calibre - base: Frederick Piguet 1185 - 37 jewels - 42 hours power-reserve - frequency: 21.600 vph Case: - 18 Carat yellow gold - polished - width: 31,5mm excl. crown, 35,5mm incl. - length: 52,2mm lug to lug - 10,4mm thick - unique number: 8*****LX (for buyer only), best proof of authenticity Bezel: - 18 Carat yellow gold - polished - fixed - chic cpecial curved shape Sapphire crystal, anti-reflective Case-back: - transparent, sapphire glass Crown: - pull/push - chic special Cartier shape - blue precious gemstone Dial: - sunray silver - big date at 12:00 o'clock - blued hands - black printed Roman numerals - minute markers around the oval - famous Railroad minute track - chronograph central seconds hand - three chronograph sub-dials: 30 min. counter at 03:00 o'clock running second at 06:00 o'clock 12 hours counter at 09:00 o'clock Bracelet: - black Cartier new leather - length: ca. 22,5cm incl. wristwatch itself - width: 22mm by lugs, 18mm by clasp Clasp: - 18 Carat yellow gold, solid - polished - folding - unique Cartier shape Weight: 120 grams Water-resistant: not really recommended for swimming and/or diving Cartier red watch box with books/docs.
