Sphalerite 'schalenblende' on Baryte - Les Cèdres, Les Malines mine, Saint-Laurent-le-Minier, Cévennes, France - Height: 22 cm - Width: 18.5 cm- 5136 g

Watch a video of this specimen by following the Vimeo link below: https://vimeo.com/1139862127/720c713f9b Here is a large specimen featuring white baryte blades partly coated in concretionate 'schalenblende' sphalerite from Les Cèdres district in Les Malines mine. Les Malines is a major deposit Pb-Zn-Ag deposit located in the Cévennes massif near Le Vigan. Several mines were very active since the Middle Age and the modern mining works, operated by the Peñarroya-Metaleurop company, shut down in 1991 after producing almost 1 million tons of metal. Les Malines became famous in the mineral collection world in the 1980's when the modern mine sections of Les Cèdres and La Sanguinède hit a succession of fantastic pockets with outstanding baryte balls or bournonite crystals, the two 'star' species of the deposit!
