A pair of patinated plaster bookends dating from 1850–1900, in a religious style depicting two monks reading.
Description from the seller
Pair of antique bookends in patinated plaster (attributed to Michel Pascal)
Charming pair of antique patinated plaster bookends, depicting two monks reading, seated in a meditative pose.
Beautiful expressions, detailed drapery and natural patina (brown-ochre tones), typical of late 19th and early 20th century productions.
On one of the two copies, a heavily worn molded inscription can be seen, partially legible as "... PASCAL".
This marking and the general style are reminiscent of the religious models of François-Michel Pascal (1810–1882), a renowned French sculptor.
The attribution remains cautious, but these elements are consistent with workshop casts based on his models.
Their compact size and weight make them truly functional and decorative bookends.
Dimensions (each):
Height: 18 cm
Width: 9.5 cm
Depth: approx. 9–10 cm
Weight: 510 g each (1.02 kg per pair)
Material: patinated plaster in the style of terracotta / antique bronze.
Very good overall condition for their age.
Minor surface wear and patina irregularities consistent with age.
No damage, no visible restoration. Homogeneous patina and very beautiful presence.
Late 19th – early 20th century (circa 1880–1930).
A classic and sought-after subject: monks reading.
Complete pair (rare).
Partially legible molded inscription, possibly “Michel Pascal”.
Beautiful original patina.
