Description from the seller
GDR flag – 3.00 x 1.65 meters – with factory label 1979, intended for government buildings or barracks
A large and authentic flag from the former GDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik). A state flag example, recognizable by the affixed control label and production details (VEB Bandtex, 1979).
This flag is one of the most recognizable symbols of the Cold War.
• The GDR was founded in 1949 after the division of Germany.
• In 1959, the coat of arms was added to the flag to distinguish it from West Germany (FRG).
• The flag flew until October 3, 1990, the year of German reunification and the end of the GDR.
• After the fall of the Berlin Wall, many GDR symbols were removed or destroyed, making original examples like this one increasingly scarce.
With metal rings and original labels still attached
This flag with production/control labels is particularly interesting because many old GDR flags were destroyed after 1990.
