Description from the seller
Lita Cabellut (Sariñena, Aragón, October 24, 1961) is a Spanish artist who lives and works in The Hague. Her work is characterized by large-scale canvases on which traditional fresco techniques and modern applications of oil paint, ink, and other materials are combined. The hand-applied craquelé gives a skin to her portraits of vagrants, prostitutes, religious figures, historical characters, and fictional characters.
Cabellut, born in a small village in Aragón into a Roma family, moved to Barcelona with her family as a child, where her mother ran a brothel. She was left in the care of her grandmother and spent most of her days on the street selling 'imaginary stars.' When her grandmother passed away, Cabellut stayed in an orphanage. At the age of twelve, Lita was adopted by a Catalan family. During this period, she discovered the Prado and was inspired by the paintings of Goya, Velázquez, and Rembrandt.
Meanwhile, Lita Cabellut has grown into an artist of international allure. Her works are exhibited in museums and at international art fairs, and her pieces are actively collected by art enthusiasts both domestically and abroad.
This expressive portrait depicts a distorted face, covered with rough textures and dark shadows, evoking feelings of decay, pain, and mystery. The absence of clear facial features enhances the emotional intensity of the work. The artist explores themes such as transience, identity, and inner struggle. The result is a powerful, confrontational image that invites reflection.
The painting is signed and dated on the back.
The book in the photos is an illustration of Cabellut's work.
