Photographer Kazuo Kitai's photobook ‘Sanrizuka 1969 - 1971 (Second Printing)’. Kazuo Kitai, winner of the 1st Kimura Ihei Photography Award (‘To the Village (1980)’), is one of Japan's leading documentary photographers. From his “Struggle” works, epitomized by the 1960s postwar ‘Resistance (1965)’, to his ‘Countryside’ series depicting Japan's fading original landscapes from the 1970s onward, and further to urban life and China-related subjects, Kitai found the significance of photography in documenting the so-called commonplace “world of everyday life”. He left behind numerous intimate, somewhat nostalgic, and profoundly deep works. This book is one of Kitai Kazuo's early masterpieces, on par with Resistance, and is counted among the most notable works within the “Struggle / Protest” genre, a subject many photographers have explored. While much of the work depicts battles between residents and the state, this volume uniquely focuses on the tranquil local nature, the land itself, and the rich, everyday lives of the people inhabiting it – a perspective quintessentially Kitai Kazuo. Second printing. (Included in The Japanese Photobook 1912–1990)
