In the GDR, nudity - especially through the Freikörperkultur (FKK, or “free body culture”) - had an ambivalent but generally positive significance: it was officially promoted as health-enhancing and connected to nature, provided a degree of private freedom away from state control, and became a mass phenomenon representing a form of socialist nonconformity that differed from West German FKK culture.
