Shakyamuni Buddha - Copper - Nepal - Late 20th century

This statue depicts Shakyamuni Buddha in a meditative pose on a finely crafted double lotus pedestal. The right hand is in the Bhumisparsha Mudra, the 'earth-touching gesture,' symbolizing the moment of enlightenment. The left hand rests in the lap, holding the alms bowl, a traditional attribute of the historical Buddha.

The most striking feature is the blue coloration of the hair part (Ushnisha). This coloring is widespread in Tibetan and Nepalese representations and symbolically represents transcendence, spiritual wisdom, and the overcoming of worldly ignorance. In many regions, traditional blue mineral pigment (e.g., lapis lazuli appearance) is used to emphasize the exalted nature of the Buddha.

The statue is made of copper and features detailed engravings on the clothing, body, and base. The underside bears a traditional engraving pattern.
