Alfano Dardari (1924-1988) - still life trompe-l'œil

The Italian artist Alfano Dardari was a surrealist painter born in Meldola, Italy, in 1924. In his paintings, he uses the technique of trompe-l'œil ('deceive the eye') to create objects that appear three-dimensional, even though they are on a two-dimensional surface. His work has been described as 'metaphysical hyperrealism.' His still lifes feature roses, cigarettes, and wooden matches that seem to have just been put out, with columns of smoke rising from them. His works have been exhibited in Italy and the United States. He received the Golden Brush Award in 1979.
