The print “Smile Race, Sailing Cup, Fyn, Denmark” was created for a sailing event around Fyn (Funen), Denmark in 2020, called Smile Race. The design is by Mads Berg, well known for his modern vintage / Art Deco–inspired illustrations. This print aims to evoke the joy of sailing (“sejlglæden”) from the 1970s and 80s, both in style and in spirit. The idea behind the Smile Race is to bring back the atmosphere of old distance sailing races of the 70s/80s: inclusive, for all levels (casual sailors, club sailors, competitive), emphasizing community and enjoyment, not just competition. To reduce the burden on participants, the event allows several start towns across Fyn, so fewer people need to travel far just to get to the start. This was especially important during COVID-19 times.
