Description from the seller

“Jacuzzi James — Seductive Gaze Into Camera” — Original Darkroom Print by Michael Joseph
Clapham Common Pool, London, late 1980s (annotated & signed)

A strikingly sculptural and quietly smouldering study of a young man at rest, leaning forward with a cool, contemplative confidence, his chin balanced on his fist. In this rare moment of steam, stillness, and subtle seduction, he meets the camera with a gaze that is both direct and dreamlike — a look that lingers, slow and magnetic. Soft silvery light pours across his shoulders, catching droplets on his skin, while the two dark arcs in the upper corners create a natural vignette that frames the scene with a whisper of voyeuristic mystery, as though the viewer is being invited into a private, suspended instant.

Made at the photographer’s pool near Clapham Common, this portrait transforms a simple pause into something timeless, tactile, and near-mythic. Joseph’s intuitive grasp of light and tone is unmistakable here: the interplay of water, shadow, and sculpted form becomes a kind of visual poetry, shaped with the same hands-on darkroom mastery that defines his best work.

Though widely recognised for his Beggars Banquet photographs of The Rolling Stones, Joseph’s archive spans decades of portraiture, documentary, and experimental images — celebrated in galleries and collections throughout the UK and abroad for their drama, tenderness, and unmistakable allure.

Photograph: Original vintage gelatin silver print, gloss finish
Annotations: Titled and signed in ink on the mount
Paper dimensions: 40.8 cm (h) × 30.5 cm (w)
Shot: early 1990s

This one-off vintage print will be packaged with great care and dispatched with the same devotion I bring to all these rare, historical pieces — preserving and sharing them with integrity and love.

Seller's Story

My father, Michael Joseph, was an advertising photographer based in London from the mid-sixties to the early nineties. During that time, he created some truly remarkable work — his most famous moment being the Beggars Banquet gatefold for the Rolling Stones. My ongoing mission is to share and celebrate what we call 'the other photos' — the lesser-known but equally captivating pieces from his archive. Within this collection, you'll find a mix of test prints, images from specific photo shoots, and more personal works, all created with his characteristic passion and devotion. Many of these images owe their atmosphere to the magic of the darkroom: intricate group scenes, striking still lifes, and moments that draw the viewer in and stir emotion. Variety is key - and I often offer unique, one-off pieces. I hope you enjoy discovering my father’s work, and I look forward to sending you a genuine piece of photographic history.
