Model/type: Stories with written texts in French; condition: Good; six glass slides with handwritten French text.
Description from the seller
Although the invention of the magic lantern is generally attributed to the 17th century, its greatest popularity as an optical projector was found between the late 18th and early 20th centuries. It was used both for entertainment and education.
All the records lack their paper edges, and a piece of glass has broken off one of them, but I found it too beautiful not to include.
All magic lantern slide images are written in French and hand-colored; some texts are missing parts, making them difficult to read.
The first three panels depict a lady waiting for her beloved Malborough, who went to fight in the war. She waits and waits, then her servant returns with bad news. Malborough has died and been buried. Shock causes her to faint.
The last three plates are about Mr. and Mrs. Croquemitaine, he is a wicked character who frightens children to discipline them and 'make them wiser.' He makes his rounds to catch the boys who are disobedient.
Mrs. Croquemitaine captures disobedient girls and locks them up in the rat tower. These scenes were often depicted in children's books from the 19th century.
The magic lantern images are most likely made by the Company Gebrüder Bing Nuremberg, Germany.
Dimensions: 27 cm x 6 cm.
Weight 480 grams.
The glass plates are well packed and shipped as announced.
