Strandgezicht, oil painting by Louis Soonius (Netherlands), from the 19th century, sold with frame, 39 x 49 cm including frame.
Description from the seller
It is a remarkable work because both recreational fishermen and working fishermen are depicted together on their boats—a combination rarely captured so strikingly in one scene.
This oil painting on canvas depicts a beach scene. The work has recently been restored, cleaned, and relined. On the right, next to the two figures by the boat, a small area of damage has been carefully repaired, making the painting look beautiful again. It has also been given a new frame.
Dimensions: 30 x 40 cm
Dimensions with frame: 39 x 49 cm
The painting was created by Lodewijk (Louis) Soonius (The Hague, March 10, 1883 – The Hague, March 9, 1956), a Dutch painter and draftsman best known for his sunny beach scenes with playing children and donkeys. He began his studies at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague around 1905.
In 1913, Soonius received the Royal Grant for Free Painting, allowing him to devote himself entirely to painting. After the First World War, he joined the Hague Sketch Club, where he exhibited nude studies and gained further recognition. His work was represented by several art dealers, including Kunsthandel Kreijns & Zoon's in Rotterdam.
Soonius is known for his sunny, colorful beach scenes with figures, but he also created harbor, sea, and cityscape views. He found his inspiration primarily in The Hague and its surroundings, especially in Scheveningen, where he observed and captured the summer beach life with playing children and bathers. He was a member of the Hague Art Circle. His work remains highly valued and is held in various collections and museums.
A viewing is of course possible.
