Secretaire à abattant dating to circa 1795–1805, built from oak and mahogany with a Belgian hardstone top in an antique Directoire style, measuring 107 cm wide, 158 cm high and 50 cm deep.
Description from the seller
A drop-front secretary manufactured during the late Dutch Louis XVI / Directory period around 1795-1805.
Executed in the 'Retour d'Egypte' style, inspired by and following the fashion of Napoleon's campaign to Egypt from 1798 to 1801.
The secretary is constructed from, among other materials, oak and mahogany wood, and glued with mahogany veneer.
At the top, there is a single drawer with an inlaid brass key entry and ring handle decorated with lion heads.
Inside, there is a lid with an interior consisting of an open compartment with flat pillars and, below, six drawers veneered with Mahogany veneer and fitted with brass knobs. The writing surface is inlaid with high-quality dark green English cloth.
The key entry on the lid is decorated with, among other things, crossed arrow casings, a bow, a laurel wreath, etc. The lid is flanked on both sides by flat, tapering columns decorated with Caryatid heads and bases.
Behind the two doors, there is a single shelf and they are decorated with key entries adorned with, among other things, ram's heads, bows, garlands, twisted ribbon, etc.
Under the flat plinth, the secretary rests at the front on square tapered legs. Along with all finely cast ornaments, the secretary is richly decorated with brass profiled moldings.
All three locks have been replaced in the past and are functioning with their corresponding keys. Over the years, a number of old, unobtrusive restorations have been carried out on the secretaire. The secretaire is topped with a Belgian hardstone top.
The entire secretary is finished in its authentic wax finish, which has developed a beautiful patina over the centuries, giving the piece a deep warm color and a stunning shine!
A stately and elegant piece of furniture that is a showstopper in any interior and a pleasure to look at and work on!
The photos, along with the detailed description, form part of the description. If you have any questions before bidding, please contact the auctioneer/expert.
